Mexican Fence Post Cactus

Image 1 Image 2 Image 3

Stenocereus marginatus or Mexican fence post is a large columnar cactus from Mexico. Growing well over twelve feet tall in the landscape, the Mexican fence post makes a real nice landscape or container plant. Fits in equally well with modern or rustic design elements. New "arms" grow from the bottom of the main stems. Protect growing tips from temperatures below freezing. Tolerates a bright room indoors. Plant in morning sun all the way to full sun in the landscape. Plant in well drained soil and never over water.

Columnar Cacti design and application suggestions:

Columnar cacti are impactful and dramatic. Frame an entryway, put one in an office corner that is just screaming for something interesting or if you are lucky to live in a suitable outdoor environment, install a few columnar cacti in the landscape for dramatic effect. Our columnar cacti are equally happy in a decorative pot or planted in the ground.

Our columnar cacti offer you different colors and growth forms. The totem pole and curiosity cacti have very interesting growth habits. The Mexican fence postperuvian appleorgan pipe, saguaro and senita offer elegance and presence. The curiosity cactisilver and golden torch offer splashes of color to integrate with your space.

Why purchase our Columnar Cacti?

Our columnar cacti are grown in their native habitat right here in Southern Arizona. Raised outdoors with just the right amount of water and fertilizer, they come to you in their natural form. These plants do not come to you from a greenhouse. They are already hardy to whatever growing conditions you have to offer. Our columnar cacti present the same appearance as you will find them in their native habitats.

If you want to plant them in a container for a sunroom, patio or window planter, great! If you want to take your columnar cacti and plant them in the ground, also great! No acclimation needed. Our plants are ready to go!

Graws fast

I bought a fence post cactus in July 1922 and it was 19" tall. After a year and a half (January 2024), it is now 31" tall and healthy, even though I'm growing it in a pot.

Loving our Mexican Fence Post Cactus

Mike's guidance was super helpful in us selecting the correct plant for our breakfast nook. Our Mexican Fence Post cactus showed up as scheduled. It was packaged like a fine piece of china and traveled to Omaha, Nebraska unscathed. Talked with Mike about potting this plant and his suggestions were very helpful. Can't wait to talk my wife into letting me get another cactus from The Cactus Outlet!

don't like the curved columnars. Topped straitest section for rerooting, hopefully will get additional cacti from base.
